Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
SHREVEPORT, La. - A day after getting just one hit in an 8-2 exhibition loss to the Shreveport-Bossier Captains, the Grand Prairie AirHogs bats came to life in front of a healthy Mother's Day crowd at Fair Grounds Field Sunday, pounding out 15 runs on 18 hits en route to a 15-5 win and a split of the two-game exhibition series.
Osvaldo Rodriguez started for the Captains and ran into trouble in the first. A leadoff single and an error by centerfielder Jovanny Rosario put David Espinoza on second with no outs. Espinoza then stole second and scored on a groundout by Joe Spiers, who knocked in four runs. After getting out of a two-runner jam that inning, Rodriguez gave up a pair of runs in the third, as Grand Prairie took a 3-0 lead.
Shreveport-Bossier struck back in their half of the third against a tiring James Paxton. After the AirHogs lefty retired the first seven men he faced, he walked catcher Brian Peterson with one out in the third. Mitch Elliott then singled, and Rosario beat out the back end of a double play to keep the inning alive. Bryan Sabatella then hustled out an infield single to put the Captains on the board, before Paxton departed for righty Jarod Plummer.
Chris Garcia greeted the Grand Prairie reliever with a two-run double to deep center to tie the game, before Andres Rodriguez bounced a single up the middle to give Shreveport-Bossier the lead. After a quick fourth inning, Osvaldo Rodriguez walked the first three men in the fifth, with lefty Aaron Cunningham entering to turn switch-hitter Juan Camacho around to the right side. On one pitch, Camacho popped out to second, and Cunningham's quick day was done. But Aaron Garza singled home a pair off Kyle Medley to give the AirHogs the lead for good, giving Plummer the win and Rodriguez the loss.
The AirHogs tacked on three in the sixth, four in the seventh and three more in the eighth against Medley, Marco Gonzalez, Raul Torres and Danial McHenry, before Jakob Cunningham got the final six outs for the Captains.
Shreveport-Bossier added its final run in the eighth on an RBI groundout by Palmer Karr. The 2-through-6 hitters on the Captains (Sabatella, Garcia, Rodriguez, Jorge Alvarez and Karr) combined to get six of the Captains' eight hits and all five RBIS.
The Shreveport-Bossier Captains open the 2010 season in Fort Worth on May 13, and will be on the road for the first series of the year. The home opener is a day-night doubleheader against Pensacola on Tuesday May 18. All games will be broadcast on ESPN Radio, KRMD-1340 AM as well as streaming live on supertalk1340.com.
