Saints' Comeback Spoiled by Late Cedar Rapids Goal

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA- The Dubuque Fighting Saints erased a five-goal deficit, but Corey Petrash scored with only 52 seconds left in the game to earn the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders a 6-5 win in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals. Dubuque trailed 5-0 in the early potions of the second period, but marched back with five straight goals prior to Petrash's tally. The best-of-five series, which shifts to Dubuque next Friday and Saturday, is now tied, 1-1.

With Cedar Rapids up 2-0 in the first period on goals from Dylan McLaughlin and Andrew Oglevie, Karson Kuhlman was assessed a five-minute major for head contact on goaltender Danny Tirone at the 16:18 mark. With Seamus Malone bringing the puck over the blue line, Kuhlman was looking for a pass, and was focused on his teammate. Malone let a shot go instead, and Tirone stepped out to the top of the crease and Kuhlman, still looking towards Malone, ran into the goaltender. Tirone dropped to the ice, and the referees escorted Kuhlman to the penalty box.

The RoughRiders used the major powerplay to its full extent. Cedar Rapids scored three times on the man-advantage, with two deflection goals coming from Dylan Steman before period one ended. At the 18:41 mark, the RoughRiders tipped a shot between the legs of Dubuque goaltender Kevin Reich. Then with only six seconds left in the period, Steman deflected a Mark Auk shot over Reich's glove to end the first period at 4-0 Cedar Rapids.

Andrew Poturalski added to Cedar Rapids lead, scoring once more before the major penalty ended. Only 33 seconds into the second period, he scored past netminder Ben Johansson, who replaced Reich to open the second period, to make it 5-0.

Dubuque's comeback began in rapid success with a trio of goals. The fast and furious three-goal flurry came in a span of exactly one minute. At the 8:58 mark of the middle frame, Alexx Privitera got the Fighting Saints on the board. With a 5-on-3 powerplay, the Dubuque captain fired a shot from the high slot that beat Tirone over the catching glove to make it 5-1. With Dubuque still on the man-advantage, Robby Darrar struck just 16 seconds later. Seamus Malone threw a pass from the left wing to the far side of the ice. Darrar made no mistake, one-timing a shot past Tirone to make it 5-2 at 9:14. On the next shift, Jarrid Privitera made it a two-goal game. Shane Eiserman brought the puck over the blue line and fed the Dubuque forward. He walked around Tirone, tucking in a shot underneath the pad of the goaltender at 9:58.

In the third period, Dubuque's comeback continued. Only 12 seconds into the period, Jacob Benson struck to make it 5-4 RoughRiders. Alexx Privitera let a shot go from the right point that Tirone stopped, but Benson fired the rebound past the netminder's left pad.

At the 9:51 mark of the third period, Dubuque equalized. With the Fighting Saints maintaining puck control, Seamus Malone received a pass from Josh Elmes. Malone waited for a shooting lane to open, and from the left point, he snapped a wrist shot that beat Tirone over the shoulder to make it 5-5.

The game went back and forth in the final minutes. Cedar Rapids had the puck in Dubuque's zone along the left wing board. Josh Elmes knocked down a RoughRider player and in the process, lost his helmet. With Elmes distracted, Poturalski came up with the puck and fed it to Petrash who streaked in on goal, and lifted a shot over Johnasson's glove at the 19:07 mark to give the RoughRiders the win.

Cedar Rapids outshot Dubuque 37-35 in the victory. The Fighting Saints were 2-for-5 on the powerplay while Cedar Rapids was 3-for-5.
