Bloomington Thunder News Release
TULSA - The Bloomington Edge led most of the contest and earned their first Champions Professional Indoor Football League win of the season by holding off a late surge and defeating the Oklahoma Defenders 59-58 on Saturday night at Cox Business Center.
The teams traded scores in the first quarter as the Edge led 14-12 after one period on a two-yard run by Andre Raymond and a 19-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Lewis from Charles Dowdell. The Edge extended the lead at halftime to 36-26 thanks to a 28-yard field goal by Eric Broughton, an 18-yard connection from Dowdell to Lewis and touchdown runs of one and 10 yards by Raymond.
A 29-yard pass from Dowdell to Darrelynn Dunn on the first play of the second half built the Edge lead to 43-26. The teams again traded scores in third quarter as Dowdell found Lewis for a seven-yard touchdown pass on the Edge's next possession to give them a 49-40 through three quarters.
Dowdell kept the Edge out of the Defenders' reach with an 11-yard touchdown run with 4:59 left after an earlier Broughton field goal to put Bloomington ahead 59-46, but Oklahoma ran the next play from scrimmage into the end zone on a 45-yard scamper by Kingjack Washington to cut the Edge lead to 59-52 with 4:31 left in regulation. The Edge turned the ball over on downs on the subsequent possession at the Defenders' 5-yard line with under two minutes remaining, and Oklahoma then cut their deficit to 59-58 on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Brian May to Jeff Hughley with 57 seconds. The Defenders had two chances at a two-point conversion thanks to an Edge penalty but came up empty, and the Edge recovered the onside kick and kneeled out the clock for the victory.
Dowdell was 16-of-29 through the air for 204 yards with one interception and five touchdowns for the Edge (1-4), while Brady May was 11-of-20 with two interceptions for 137 yards and three touchdowns for the Defenders (3-3). Dowdell was the leading Edge rusher with 82 yards on eight carries with one score while Raymond ran 17 times for 58 yards and two touchdowns. Lewis caught 10 passes for 128 yards and three touchdowns as the leading Edge receiver. Washington rushed 22 times for 155 yards and four touchdowns for Oklahoma. Isaiah Anderson caught two touchdown passes and ran for another for the hosts. Eric Tapley registered eight solo tackles to lead the Edge defense.
