Omaha Lancers News Release
RALSTON, NE - Thanks to a furious two-goal rally in the third period, the Omaha Lancers pushed the Sioux City Musketeers to overtime in game one of the two teams' best-of-five Western Conference Semi-Final series on Saturday at Ralston Arena, but in the extra session, the Musketeers prevailed by a 4-3 final score to claim a 1-0 lead in the series with game two looming on Sunday at 5:05 pm.
Sioux City charged out of the gate on Saturday with a goal on their very first shot, as Brock Boeser delivered the Musketeers a 1-0 lead just 47 seconds into the game. The Lancers responded in short order though, as a crisp passing play by Luc Snuggerud and Ryan Tait set up a one-time power-play ripper by Jimmy Schuldt that tied the game at one at 4:23 of the opening frame.
In a tight-checking middle stanza, Sioux City reclaimed the edge at 8:45 of the period when Brandon Hawkins took a stretch pass from Adam Johnson and Joe Snively and buried his first of the playoffs on a breakaway finish. The Musketeers made it 3-1 five minutes later as Avery Peterson wedged home a left-circle wrister that followed a Lancers turnover.
Determined to claw back into the game, Niklas Folin provided the Lancers with a revitalizing step-up play at 11:53 of the extra session, when he held the offensive blue line and wired home his first of the playoffs, an unassisted score that drew Omaha within a goal at 3-2. Then with time dwindling in regulation, Brendan Smith was left to his own devices in the slot and thanks to a great setup from Tyler Vesel and Jake Randolph, the Centennial, Colorado native popped home his first career USHL goal to tie the game at three with less than three minutes remaining in the game, a marker that ultimately forced overtime. In the extra session, Peterson ended up the hero for Sioux City, as the Nebraska-Omaha recruit pounced on a loose puck in his offensive zone at 1:49 and powered a snapper home to deliver the Musketeers a 4-3 victory and a 1-0 series lead.
Next up for the Lancers, it's game two of their best-of-five Western Conference Semi-Final series vs. the Musketeers, with the opening faceoff set for 5:05 pm on Sunday at Ralston Arena.
