St. Paul Saints News Release

SIOUX CITY, IA (July 23, 2012) - The only other time the St. Paul Saints scored 14 runs this season they lost. On Monday night at Lewis and Clark Park their season tying high 14 runs was more than enough as they drubbed the Sioux City Explorers 14-2.

The Saints came out hammering Explorers starter Jason Jarvis in the first inning. They sent nine men to the plate, scored five runs and didn't stop scoring runs the entire night. Joe Spiers led off the game with a single, and after Spiers stole second, Adam Frost knocked him home with a double to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. Willie Cabrera then lined a shot back to the pitcher Jarvis, who knocked the ball down and decided to throw the ball to third, but Wally Backman Jr. dropped the ball allowing Frost to score making it 2-0. With one out Jose Hernandez made it 3-0 with an RBI double. Miles Durham and Jon Townsend added back-to-back RBI singles to finish the scoring in the inning.

In the bottom of the first Saints starter Luke Anderson had his only trouble of the entire game. He gave up back-to-back singles to Brandon Newton and Backman to lead off the inning. Anderson then walked Peter Barrows to load the bases and Kris Sanchez to force in a run. That's when Anderson settled down and dominated the rest of the night. Ray Serrano added a sacrifice fly to make it 5-2. Anderson allowed just three more hits during the rest of his outing, the only three men he would allow to reach from innings two through seven. He went 7.0 innings allowing two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out two.

The Saints scored at least a run in five of the first six innings and got a solo homer from Hernandez in the second, his eighth of the season, and an RBI triple from Jon Townsend in the same inning to give the Saints a 7-2 lead. Jon Townsend finished a home run shy of the cycle going 3-5, with two RBI and a run scored.

Jon Townsend wasn't the only Saints player to collect three hits as Adam Frost, Joe Spiers and Miles Durham also collected three hits as part of a 17 hit barrage. Durham went 3-4 with a home run, his fourth in 17 games with the Saints, drove in three (he now has 15 RBI in 17 games) and scored three runs. Seven of the nine Saints starters collected a hit.

The Saints now head to Community America Ballpark for a three game series against the Kansas City T-Bones beginning on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Both teams are TBA. The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
