Saints Char T-Bones in 11-7 Win

ST. PAUL, MN (July 13, 2014) - Neither a five run deficit nor 12 walks by the St. Paul Saints pitching staff was enough to prevent them from winning on Sunday afternoon at Midway Stadium. In front of 4,731 the Saints used their best offensive output in the last three weeks to defeat the Kansas City T-Bones 11-7.

With the Saints trailing 5-0 going to the bottom of the third the Saints offense found its footing. Sam Maus led off with an infield single to second and that was followed by a walk to Joe Bonfe. With one out Henry Wrigley made it 5-1 with an RBI single. With two outs Angelo Songco doubled home a pair to make it 5-3.

The Saints took their first lead of the game in the fifth when Wrigley reached on an infield single to short and advanced to second on a throwing error by shortstop Vladimir Frias. With one out Songco was hit by a pitch. Joey Becker tied the game with a double to straightaway center that scored Wrigley and Songco. Keith Brachold's infield single to second moved Becker to third. Dwight Childs, who leads the league in sacrifice bunts and successfully laid down a suicide squeeze on Thursday night, laid down another one to give the Saints a 6-5 lead.

The lead didn't last long as the T-Bones utilized three walks by reliever Mikey Mehlich in the sixth to score two runs. With one out Brian Erie walked. With two outs TJ Mittelstaedt and David Espinosa walked to load the bases. Danny Richar singled to right that knocked in two runs to give the T-Bones a 7-6 lead.

The Saints fought back in the bottom of the sixth when Bonfe singled and moved to second on a throwing error by second baseman Richar. Wrigley tied the game with an RBI single.

The Saints took the lead for good in the seventh as Brachold doubled with one out. With two outs Maus singled him home to give the Saints an 8-7 lead. Bonfe followed with a triple to left-center that scored Maus and Bonfe came around to score on the play when Frias' throw to third went into foul territory giving the Saints a 10-7 lead.

Saints reliever Dan Sattler earned his 12th save of the season by pitching the final 2.0 innings and not giving up a run.

The 12 walks by the Saints was one shy of the franchise high of 13 set on May 18 of this season.

The Saints have Monday off and begin a five game series at Shaw Park against the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Tuesday. The Saints will play two games on Tuesday as the first game begins at 5:00 p.m. and is the resumption of the June 14 game that was postponed due to rain in the bottom of the third inning with the Goldeyes leading 1-0. The Goldeyes have a runner at second and two outs. The regularly scheduled game will be scheduled for seven innings and will begin approximately 30 minutes at the conclusion of the first game. Both games can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
