St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN (June 15, 2009) - While outfielder Brent Krause has done a tremendous job filling in at third base for the St. Paul Saints, it's not the ideal situation for manager George Tsamis. To help shore up the infield and give Krause a chance to return to his natural position in the outfield the Saints signed infielder Stephen Derrick and also removed relief pitcher Scott Vander Weg from the disabled list.

The 22-year-old Derrick enters his first professional season after competing at Division III McMurray University in Abilene, TX. During his senior season he was an All-ASC West Division second-team selection at third base after leading McMurray in RBI with 50. He hit .325 and finished tied for second on the team with nine home runs and third on the team in doubles with 13. He also finished in the top five on the team in runs scored, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, hits, total bases and stolen bases.

The Saints also removed Vander Weg from the disabled list. He pitched in Sunday night's ballgame against the Wichita Wingnuts and tossed 1.2 perfect innings of relief while striking out two. He is 0-0 with a 5.63 ERA in five games in 2009. In 8.0 innings pitched he has walked just one and struck out six while the opposition is hitting .233 against him.

The Saints roster now stands at the league maximum 22 players, 12 position players and 10 pitchers.
