Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs announced today the team has acquired defenceman Michael Abbott from the Gatineau Olympiques.
In exchange, the Sea Dogs sent a 4th-round pick in the 2015 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League entry draft.
"We have added another young [18-year old] defenseman to the hockey club," says Sea Dogs head coach and General Manager Mike Kelly. "We have followed this player through midget, the U17 program, and his progress in the Quebec league. When we had the opportunity to obtain his rights we felt he would be a solid addition."
Abbott, a native of St. John's, NL, was originally selected in the fourth round, 61st overall, by the Prince Edward Island Rocket in the 2011 QMJHL draft. The 18-year-old d-man played 46 games with the Rocket in 2011-12 and posted a goal and seven assists in that span.
He was picked from the PEI Rocket during the Sherbrooke Phoenix' expansion draft on June 6th and traded again to the Gatineau Olympiques on Aug. 20th. Abbott has suited up in 31 games for the Olympiques this year, scoring twice and helping on three others.
"He is a good skating puck moving D man who has a real good shot. He is also a good character kid and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to add him to our team," added Kelly.
The Sea Dogs return to action and Abbott will likely make his debut on Dec. 29th as they play host to the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. Tickets are available at the Harbour Station box office, online at tickets.harbourstation.ca or by calling 657-1234.
