March 17, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL) News Release
SPRINGFIELD, MA ... The American Hockey League announced today that Saint John Flames goaltender Dany Sabourin has been named the Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week for the period ending March 16, 2003. Sabourin went 3-1-0 in four starts last week, stopping 122 of 128 shots and recording two shutouts as the Flames kept up their pursuit of a spot in the Calder Cup 2003 Playoffs.
As the Flames embarked on a nine-game road trip, Sabourin's week was highlighted by a pair of shutouts at the First Union Arena in Wilkes-Barre. He stopped all 33 shots in the Flames' 2-0 win over the Penguins on Wednesday night, then made 42 more saves on Sunday as Saint John posted a 5-0 victory. Sabourin also turned aside 18 shots to help the Flames defeat league-leading Hamilton at Copps Coliseum on Monday, 6-3, and recorded 29 saves on 32 shots in a 4-2 loss at Binghamton on Friday. For the week, Sabourin was 3-1-0 with a 1.50 goals against average, a .953 save percentage and his third and fourth shutouts of the season.
In recognition of his achievement, Sabourin will receive a Sher-Wood leather jacket, presented to him during an on-ice ceremony prior to an upcoming game. In addition, Sher-Wood will donate five travel bags to the Saint John Minor Hockey Association in Sabourin's name.
In his last 10 appearances, Sabourin is 6-3-1 with a 1.25 GAA and four shutouts, helping Saint John climb to within four points of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. On the year, the 22-year-old rookie is 15-16-3 in 38 AHL contests with a 2.65 GAA and .907 save percentage. A fourth-round draft pick of Calgary in 1998, Sabourin, a native of Val d'Or, Que., had played a total of 11 games with Saint John over the past two seasons after making his pro debut with the Flames at age 18 during the 1999 Calder Cup Playoffs.
