San Jose SaberCats News Release

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Nov. 14, 2003) – Former Arizona Rattlers offensive specialist Calvin Schexnayder, the Arena Football League's Most Valuable Offensive Player in 1998, has agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the San Jose SaberCats, announced General Manager Terry Malley.

Schexnayder (6-0, 185), a first-team All-AFL selection in both 1997 and 1998, earned Offensive Player of the Year honors after establishing league records with 136 receptions, 1,982 receiving yards and 44 touchdowns. His yardage total for the 1998 season remains an AFL record.

A member of the Rattlers from 1994 to 1999, Schexnayder led or tied for the team lead in scoring catches in each of those seasons before joining the San Francisco Demons of the XFL in 2000. He returned to the Rattlers for the 2001 season and amassed 53 receptions for 845 yards with a team-high 23 touchdowns before a knee injury against San Jose on July 6 ended his season.

After nearly a year of rehab, Schexnayder joined the Tampa Bay Storm in May 2002 and caught 42 passes for 492 yards and 11 touchdowns in seven games. The Storm lost to San Jose in the quarterfinal round of the playoffs that year.

During his eight-year AFL career ‘Shakes' has totaled 565 receptions for 7,986 yards and 169 touchdowns. He remains Arizona's career leader in receptions (649) and receiving touchdowns (158).

The SaberCats open their 10th season in the Arena Football League in February. Season and group tickets for the 2004 season are available by contacting a sales representative at (408) 573-5577.
