Firebirds Sign Three More

INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana Firebirds announced today that they have signed three more free-agents for the 2004 AFL season. Eight-year AFL veteran WR/LB Kerry Brown, DS Robert Bean and FB/LB Jarrod Penright have all come to terms with the team. The Firebirds are bringing to conclusion a week in which they, along with first-year Head Coach Steve DeBerg, have signed several key players for the upcoming season. Terms of the deals were not disclosed, per team regulations.

Brown (6'5, 210) has played eight seasons in the AFL, most recently with the New York Dragons in 2003. For his career, he has recorded 319 receptions for 4,124 yards and scored 79 touchdowns. Defensively, Brown has amassed 120.0 tackles, two forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, six interceptions, eight pass breakups and has scored two defensive touchdowns. Brown played three seasons with Firebirds' Assistant Head Coach Mark Stoute in Toronto and New England, while also spending time with Florida Bobcats from 1997-99. He played both wide receiver and quarterback at University of Pacific, earning All-Big West First-Team honors during his senior season, leading the team with 50 receptions for 951 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Bean (5'11, 180) has played the past three seasons in the National Football League. He was a fifth round draft choice by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2000, following a stand-out two-year career at Mississippi State. In two season with the Bengals (2000-01), Bean played in 27 games, recording 64.0 tackles, one interception and ten pass breakups. He was signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars prior to the 2002 season and recorded two tackles and a pass breakup in five games played. Bean transferred to MSU, from Georgia Military Institute where he was named a JUCO All-American, and earned All-SEC honors in both years. He finished his career with the Bulldogs having started 19 of 23 games and recording 77.0 total tackles (56 solo), six interceptions, 22 pass breakups, one fumble recovery and 6 blocked kicks.

Penright (6'3, 240), a rookie who played college football at Texas A&M, was signed as a free agent by the Minnesota Vikings, and subsequently released, back in August. He was a Second-Team All-Big 12 Conference choice as a senior after totaling 50 tackles (15.5 for loss) and 9.5 sacks for the Aggies. His junior year, Penright earned First-team All-Big 12, posting 66.0 tackles (19 for loss) and 10.5 sacks. For his career he amassed 143 tackles (37.5 for loss), 21 sacks and three pass breakups.
