INDIANAPOLIS â It was announced at 3:45 PM (CT) today, on ESPNews, that Indiana Firebirds' QB Adrian McPherson has been named the Arena Football League's Rookie of the Year for the 2004 season. McPherson finished the season as the 4th rated passer (119.6 QB rating) and 3rd leading rusher (259 yards) in the AFL.
McPherson played in 14 games for Indiana, starting the final 13 games and finishing 8-5 as a starter. Following an 0-5 start, McPherson guided the Firebirds within one game of the playoffs. He finished the season completing 237-of-397 pass attempts for 3,297 yards and 61 touchdowns. He also rushed for 19 scores, the most ever by an AFL quarterback. McPherson recorded the two highest single-game rushing performances in the league this season, rushing for 64 and 55 yards in Indiana's two games versus Detroit. His eleven attempts against Chicago in week three were also a high for the AFL in 2004.
Last week McPherson was named to the 2004 All-Rookie Team. He was named the league's Rookie of the Month for March and the Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in Indiana's week 17 victory over playoff semifinalist Colorado. McPherson recorded a perfect QB rating (158.3) on April 11th versus Carolina, completing 13-of-15 passes for 194 yards and five touchdowns, leading the âBirds to a 65-31 win.
McPherson becomes the first Rookie of the Year award winner in Firebirds' franchise history. Chris Snyder is the only player to receive a 2004 post-season honor thus far, earning a spot on the All-Ironman for the first time in his 6-year career.
