Greenville Drive News Release
Salisbury, MD - Ryne Lawson looked like a natural on the mound Tuesday night, but not in his usual role. Making his first start of 2008, and eighth in 35 professional outings, the right-hander shutdown the Delmarva Shorebirds (47-41, 9-10) in the Drive's (48-41, 8-11) 4-1 victory.
Tossing five scoreless innings, Lawson allowed just one Shorebirds base-runner to get into scoring position as Wally Crancer laced a one-out triple in the bottom of the fifth. While surrendering a trio of hits and fanning three, Lawson extended his scoreless inning streak to 18.1 innings, a span of seven appearances.
Combining with Lawson for the stellar pitching performance were relievers Kyle Fernandes and Javier Garcia. Fernandes allowed Delmarva's only run, tossing three innings. Avenging last night's extra-inning loss, Garcia worked a scoreless ninth, striking out the side to earn his first save.
Timely hitting was the key for the Greenville offense, as three of the team's four runs came with two outs. Juan Apodaca, who finished 2-for-4, broke a scoreless tie in the top of the second as he stroked a two-out, RBI-single. An inning later, Ryan Kalish knocked in what would end up being the winning run with an RBI-double.
Yamaico Navarro extended the Drive's lead to 3-0 in the top of the fifth against Luis Noel (8-4), singling home Apodaca with two-outs. Greenville scored their final run in the top of the eighth as David Marks tripled in Oscar Tejeda.
The Drive and Shorebirds continue their four-game series tomorrow evening with first pitch set for 7:05 PM. Southpaw All-Star Felix Doubront will toe the rubber for Greenville as Delmarva counters with a lefty of their own, Nathan Nery.
The Drive return home to Fluor Field on Wednesday, July 16th when they begin an eight-game homestand, starting with the Lake County Captains.
