Ryan Nie Stops 30 Shots as Kalamazoo Shuts Out Wheeling in Game Five

Wheeling, WV- Ryan Nie was near perfect in game two giving up a late goal off of a turnover, in game five the Kalamazoo Wings netminder had no such setback, as he stopped 30 shots to help guide the K-Wings to a 4-0 victory over the Wheeling Nailers and take a three games to two lead in the Best-of-Seven Eastern Conference Finals.

Jumping ahead five minutes into the opening period, Darryl Lloyd (3rd) snuck around a defenseman used a deke and flipped a backhander past Peter Delmas to give Kalamazoo the early lead. Lloyd's first three goals of the postseason have all been game-winners for the K-Wings.

Taking advantage of the second half of a Paul Crowder double-minor for high-sticking, the K-Wings extended their lead midway in the period with a power-play marker from Justin Taylor. The goal was Taylor's team-leading third on the power-play and his league-best ninth tally overall.

After no scoring in the second period, Kalamazoo put the game out of reach striking twice in the third period. Lloyd tacked on his second goal of the night and fourth of the playoffs with a quick wrister from between the circles.

A.J. Thelen concluded the scoring for Kalamazoo midway in the period scoring on the power-play. All three of Thelen's goals have been scored with a man-advantage, which ties him with Taylor for the team-lead.

Nie earned the K-Wings first-ever ECHL postseason shutout and the first since April 22, 2009 when Joel Martin shutout the Fort Wayne Komets in the International Hockey League playoffs.

The shutout was Nie's fifth career postseason shutout and his third as member off the K-Wings. Nie earned two shutouts during the K-Wings 2007 United Hockey League postseason.

The K-Wings will return home on Tuesday, May 10th for a 7 p.m. face-off in game six of the best-of-seven Eastern Conference Finals versus the Nailers.
