Wilson Tobs News Release
WILSON, N.C. (July 21, 2011) - Tobs CF Ryan Mathews (N.C. State) broke the team's single-season homerun record when he belted his 13th long ball out of the park at Fleming Stadium Wednesday night in Wilson.
Mathews had tied the Tobs record of 12 homeruns in a season the night before in Edenton, when he hit a three-run homer in the top of the fourth off of the Steamers' Eddie Perkins. Mathews' record-breaking homerun last night was also of the three-run variety, and came against Peninsula starter Ethan Carter in the bottom of the first.
Mathews is now tied with Kevin Mahoney (Forest City 2008), Rich Poythress (Thomasville 2007), and C.J. Ziegler (Asheboro 2006) for the third most homeruns in a season in Coastal Plain League history. The record for most homeruns in a season is 17, set by Jason Dubois (VCU) who played for Rocky Mount in 1998.
There are 12 games remaining for the Tobs in the 2011 Coastal Plain League regular season. Mathews, with 36 RBI, is currently four RBI shy of tying the Tobs single-season record in that statistic as well. He will try to go after that record, as well as try and chase down Dubois' record when the Tobs host the Outer Banks Daredevils tonight in Wilson beginning at 7:05pm (Gates open at 6:00pm).
