The Columbia Blowfish (14-31; 5-12) scored nine runs on 14 hits, but it was not enough as the Morehead City Marlins (24-21; 10-7) won an 11-9 decision Thursday night at Capital City Stadium.
The Marlins started the offensive explosion in the first inning, jumping out to a 2-0 lead on Chase McDonald's 11th home run of the season, off Blowfish starting pitcher Blake Forslund.
Morehead City added to the lead in the top of the second inning, when Zach Stephens scored on a Forslund wild pitch, and Jake Carlson hit a sacrifice fly to take a 4-0 lead over the Blowfish. Forslund (0-5) gave up seven runs on six hits in four and two-thirds innings.
The Blowfish fought back in the bottom of the fourth inning, cutting the deficit to 4-3. DeMontez Jones and Chase Vergason each had RBI singles off Marlins' starting pitcher Christian Malbrough.
The Marlins came right back in the top of the fifth inning on RBI singles by Joe Sclafani and Mike Mercurio to extend the lead for Morehead City to 7-3.
The Blowfish narrowed the gap again in the bottom of the fifth inning. Brison Celek scored on Malbrough's wild pitch and Reggie Weatherford and Nick Abrahamson each drove in a run, cutting the score to 7-6. Malbrough gave up six runs on nine hits in four and one-third innings.
Morehead City pulled away again in the top of the sixth inning, scoring four runs off Blowfish reliever Jeff Murray. Corey Thompson and Chase McDonald each had a RBI single in the inning, giving the Marlins an 11-6 lead.
Columbia fought back in the bottom of the sixth. Celek scored on a balk by Marlins' relief pitcher Tyler Boraz. That was followed with a RBI single by Carlos Santana, cutting the score to 11-8. Boraz (2-0) pitched two innings in relief to pick up the win.
The Blowfish scored their ninth run of the night in the bottom of the seventh inning on a bases loaded walk by Celek, scoring Jones, to make it an 11-9 game.
Marlins' reliever Adam Norton shut down the Blowfish in the final two innings to pick up his first save of the season.
The Marlins and Blowfish return to Capital City Stadium Friday night to play the second game of the two game series.
