Fayetteville Snaps Losing Streak with 8-1 Win over Florence

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Before the game, the Fayetteville SwampDogs talked about improving their pitching and clutch hitting in order to snap their three-game losing streak. Then they went out and did exactly that.
Derek Brooks pitched eight innings, allowing just one run on five hits, and the SwampDogs offense delivered four runs in the second inning and two more in the third to capture an 8-1 win over the Florence RedWolves at J.P. Riddle Stadium. The win moves Fayetteville (27-17, 10-6) into a virtual tie with the Wilmington Sharks for first place in the CPL South second half standings.
Brooks (6-1) walked just one and struck out three, earning his league-leading sixth win of the season. Cody Davis pitched a perfect ninth, striking out two in a non-save situation to secure the win.
Adam Camara (0-2) took the loss for the RedWolves, who played a team other than the Columbia Blowfish for the first time in seven games. He allowed five runs in two-plus innings, surrendering four hits and two walks.
The biggest blow of the night came off the bat of third baseman Brian Yeung, who delivered a two-run homerun in the bottom of the second - his first of the year - to cap off the four-run frame. Catcher Zach Briggs drove home three, and the SwampDogs offense took advantage of five wild pitches and three passed balls from Florence (21-21, 6-8) to plate their highest run-total since scoring eight in a 12-8 loss to Columbia on July 10.
Eric Grabe delivered two more hits, raising his all-time CPL-leading hit total to 166 - four ahead of Konstantine Diamaduros of Forest City.
The SwampDogs head back on the road tomorrow night to take on the Wilmington Sharks before returning home Saturday for the first of two against the Columbia Blowfish. Saturday is Miller Motte College night, and the first 500 fans will receive a commemorative team photo. Gates open at 6 p.m. and first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
