Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - In a Saturday night exhibition match-up at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, the Victoria Salmon Kings took on the University of British Columbia (UBC) Thunderbirds in the first of a two-game weekend set. The Salmon Kings started Jase Weslosky, while the Thunderbirds gave Jordan White the call in net.

Victoria opened the scoring 13 seconds in as Ryan Dingle skated in from the right side and had his shot tip-in off a defender and past the goaltender. The Salmon Kings extended their lead at the 10:31 mark as Milan Gajic scored on a quick cross-crease pass from Rob Hennigar. UBC cut the lead in half at 16:35 as Mathew Kakoske slapped a loose rebound in the slot past Weslosky. The first period ended with the Salmon Kings holding a 2-1 advantage.

The Thunderbirds knotted the game at 2-2 at the 5:47 mark as Desloges scored on a quick shot from the right side. UBC took their first lead of the game at 6:35. The Thunderbirds broke out on an odd-man rush where Michael Liambas fed Scott Wasden the puck to beat the outstretched glove of Weslosky. Victoria responded at the half way point of the period when Rick Clever put a rebound top-shelf on White. The Salmon Kings re-established their lead with six minutes remaining in the period as captain Peter Vandermeer blasted a shot from the point in to make it 4-3. Stefanishion would score late in the period with a slap shot from the right faceoff circle as the Salmon Kings went into the second intermission ahead 5-3.

The Salmon Kings stretched their lead to 6-3 just 2:18 into the final frame as Dingle registered his second goal of the game while shorthanded. UBC then notched two consecutive power play goals to bring their deficit back to one goal. The first was scored by Ruel on a quick deke to beat Weslosky, with the second marker by Wasden on a redirected shot from the point. Victoria made it 7-5 at 11:03 when Derick Martin's shot from the top of the slot wired past the netminder. The Thunderbirds cut into the Salmon Kings lead again at the 16:54 mark as a Wyatt Hamilton shot bounced off the defensemen Martin and re-directed past Weslosky into the net. Victoria sealed the game with a late empty-net tally by Dingle to secure his hat-trick. Salmon Kings 8 Thunderbirds 6.

Victoria went 0/2=00.0% on the power play, while UBC was 2/9=22.2%. The Salmon Kings outshot the Thunderbirds 39-30.
