Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA (June 26, 2005) - Rusty Brown went 4-4 and crushed three home runs and drove in six to lead the Burlington Bees (1-3, 35-39) to a 10-1 victory over the Beloit Snappers (3-1, 36-38) at Community Field this afternoon. The last time a Burlington Bee turned in a day like this was September 13, 1999 when Eric Battersby hit four home runs in a playoff game at Kane County. The win snapped a three-game losing streak and kept the Bees from being swept for the first time this year. Brown now leads the team with seven homers and 34 RBI. The nine-run victory was the Bees largest winning margin on the year.

Brown's first home run was a three-run shot and came as part of a five-run first inning that gave the Bees control of the game. Damaso Espino started the scoring with a two-run double to left and after Snappers' starter Anthony Swarzak walked Brian McFall, Brown blasted a 1-2 pitch over both walls in left. Brown's second homer was a solo shot in the third that extended the Bees' lead to 6-1. With two outs, he hit an 0-2 breaking ball over both walls in left again. The Bees added two more runs against Swarzak in the fourth. Cody Cure, making his first professional start, reached on an infield single for his second hit, stole second, and scored on a single by Irving Falu. Falu went to second on a balk and Geraldo Valentin was called out at first on a bang-bang play after a grounder toward short. That was all for Swarzak. The Snappers turned to John Williams in relief. Pete Maestrales greeted him with a singled to left that drove in Falu and the Bees led 8-0. Swarzak (7-4) was charged with eight runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings for the loss. Williams surrendered Brown's third homer in the seventh. Maestrales drew a leadoff walk and after a pair of flyouts, Brown jumped on the first pitch this time and hit it over both walls in left. Brown also singled in the fifth to finish with 13 total bases and matched his season-high of four hits, and set a career-high with 6 RBI in his first professional multi-homer game. Kyle Aselton worked a scoreless eighth to finish the game for the Snappers. Falu finished with a season-high three hits and scored twice, extending his hitting streak to 14 games. Falu finished 9-17 in this series against the Snappers.

Bees' starter Kyle Crist (5-1) allowed one run on two hits in five innings while walking three and hitting two batters in the win. The Snappers got their only run in the top of the second when Crist hit Paul Rutgers with a pitch with the bases loaded to force in Mark Zamojc. Adam Rowe pitched three shutout innings in relief and struck out four. Yovany Damico finished off the ninth and fanned a pair.

The Bees start a seven-game road swing with the first of three in Clinton tomorrow night at 7:00. LH Danny Christensen (1-3, 3.74) will start for the Bees. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
