June 26, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Peoria Chiefs News Release

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Peoria Chiefs rode the right arm and bat of Ryan Harvey in the second game to split a double header with the Cedar Rapids Kernels. The Chiefs won the second game 6-4 after Jesse Estrada's first career complete game was not enough as Peoria lost the opener 4-3.

The Chiefs struck first in the second game against Kernels' hurler Jesse Smith in the 3rd inning. Eric Patterson led with a single before stealing both second and third. With one out, Ryan Harvey doubled for the second time in the game and Patterson scored easy for a 1-0 Chiefs lead.

An inning later Oscar Bernard reached on a fielders' choice, went to second on a balk and advanced to third on a ground out by Bo Flowers. Patterson singled Bernard home for a 2-0 Peoria lead.

The lead didn't last though as the Kernels struck in the 4th against Chiefs spot starter Alfredo Polanco. The right hander allowed a leadoff homer to Drew Toussaint and two singles before throwing two wild pitches. With the score tied 2-2, Walt Nolen relieved Polanco and allowed a basehit to Jason Ramos as the Kernels took a 3-2 lead. Nolen escaped further damage when Harvey threw out Ramos at the plate to end the inning.

Harvey got it done with the bat in the top of the 5th to give the Chiefs another lead. Aaron Sisk led off with a single and Harvey slammed a two-run laser shot completely out of the park to give the Chiefs a 5-3 lead. The homer was Harvey's 10th of the season giving him three hits and three RBI in the game.

Nolen (6-2) picked up the win in relief tossing two innings in which he allowed two hits and one unearned run while striking out two. Jerry Blevins picked up his 12th save by pitching two hitless innings in which he walked one and struck out three.

In the first game, the Chiefs took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd against Michel Simard. Anthony Granato tripled to left-center with one out and scored on a fielders' choice grounder off the bat of Drew Larsen to put the Chiefs on top.

Cedar Rapids came right back in their half of the 2nd against Peoria starter Jesse Estrada. Freddy Sandoval tied the game with a single that scored Michael Collins and Jordan Renz gave the home team a 3-1 lead with a two-run homer to left.

The Kernels added to their lead in the 4th inning when Renz doubled home Richard Giannotti who led off with a single. The Chiefs cut the lead down to one in the 5th when Sam Fuld clobbered his first homer of the season, a two-run shot to right field.

Peoria threatened against Simard in the 9th bringing the go-ahead run to the plate. With two outs, Alan Rick walked and the Chiefs turned to pinch-hitter Ryan Harvey as the go-ahead run. But Simard got Harvey to bounce into a fielders choice to end the game.

Estrada (4-7) took the loss despite tossing the Chiefs second complete game of the season. The right-hander allowed four runs on nine hits over six innings while striking out four. Simard (2-0) also threw a complete game to pick up the win. He allowed three runs on six hits while walking two and striking out five.
