Lansing Lugnuts News Release
COMSTOCK PARK - The Lugnuts entered Sunday's series finale at West Michigan with a chance to sweep a four-game set from their arch-rivals for the first time in franchise history, but fell to the Whitecaps in 10 innings, losing by a 7-6 score.
The winning rally by the Whitecaps came in the 10th off Jordy Templet(5-3) with two outs and nobody on when Justin Justice, Steve Young and Brooks Colvin all collected singles. Colvin's single plated Justice with the game-winning run and helped the hosts avoid the four-game sweep.
Lansing jumped out to the early lead for the fourth straight game in the series in the second off Whitecaps starter Andrew Kown, striking for three runs on five hits. Christian Snavely's one-out single started the string of five straight hits and extended Snavely's hitting streak to nine games. The Lugnut runs came later in the frame on singles by Cory Patton, David Corrente and Aaron Mathews. Kown ended the streak by inducing a double-play groundout off the bat of Jason Armstrong.
West Michigan quickly responded in the bottom of the inning, scoring twice off Jordan Timm to cut the Lansing lead to 3-2. Josh Lee's RBI single and a double-play groundout off the bat off Andrew Graham helped produce the runs that sent home Brent Dlugach and Jeff Frazier.
The Whitecaps jumped into the lead at 4-3 in the fourth. Dlugach led off the inning with a single and advanced to second with one out when Timm hit Lee. With Graham at the plate, Timm threw wild of the bag at first trying to pick off Lee, scoring Dlugach and advancing Lee to third. With the game tied at 3-3, Graham punched a single to right to score Lee. In his first outing as a Lugnut, Timm lasted 3.1 innings and allowed six hits and three earned runs.
After the Whitecaps extended the lead to 5-3 in the fifth on a solo homer by Wilkin Ramirez, the Lugnuts rallied in the seventh to take a 6-5 advantage.
Kown walked Ryan Klosterman and Patton to start the seventh and that wildness conlcuded his afternoon. P.J. Finigan took over and got an out when David Corrente's sacrifice attempt rolled back to Finigan, who threw to third to force Klosterman. Aaron Mathews followed that with an RBI double to score Patton and cut the defecit to 5-4. Jason Armstrong then followed with an RBI single to tie the contest and Eugenio Velez's sacrifice fly to center off Ed Clelland put the Lugnuts ahead.
That lead lasted until the bottom of the eighth when Nick McIntyre's pinch-hit RBI single off Templet scored Dlugach. Both teams had chances in the ninth to win the game and the Lugnuts put their first batters on in both the 9th and 10th, but could not score, setting up the Whitecaps winning rally.
Templet's childhood buddy, Kevin Ardoin got his first win of the season, working the ninth and tenth to improve to 1-0.
Lansing will now head home to start a three-game series with the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays at Oldsmobile Park starting on Monday. Russ Savickas will start for Lansing while Jino Gonzalez take to the hill for the Devil Rays. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. at Oldsmobile Park.
