Rapid City Rush News Release
(Rapid City, SD) - The Rapid City Rush edged out the Arizona Sundogs with a 4-3 shootout victory on Monday night. The contest was the first preseason game for both sides as the teams gear up for the first week of the 2011-12 CHL season. Both teams hit the ice again tomorrow at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center beginning at 6:35pm. Tickets are available for just $10.
Rush captain Scott Wray got the scoring started with a tally just less than thirteen minutes into the contest. After receiving a cross-ice pass from defenseman Jarred Mohr, Jeff Kyrzakos feathered a pass to Wray on the back door that was tipped home for the 1-0 lead.
The middle period provided no goals, but did feature a fight between Rapid City's Anthony Perdicaro and Arizona's Tyler Matheson.
Arizona finally got on the board less than one minute into the third period when Craig Macdonald blasted a shot home from the middle of the left circle. However, Rapid City stormed back with seven minutes left when newly-signed Carl Hudson and team mainstay Les Reaney each scored less than 50 seconds apart. Anthony Perdicaro slid a pass to Hudson who traveled all the way from the Rush zone and unloaded a bomb from just inside the right side of the blueline, beating goaltender Scott Reid over the glove. It was then Reaney's turn as he fired a slapshot that was blocked in the slot, but the 4th-year pro followed his shot and snapped home the rebound to give the Rush a 3-1 lead. Three minutes later, it was Arizona's turn to notch back-to-back tallies, with the first coming from Shawn Morton-Boutin who deflected a shot home at 16:33. Just 22 seconds later, Jean-Philipp Chabot had a deflection of his own, tying the game at 3-3 with 3:05 remaining in regulation.
In overtime, the Rush held a 4-2 advantage in shots and even had a goal waived off when a player was whistled for being in the crease. Despite numerous chances for both teams, the game headed to a shootout.
In the shootout, Danny Battochio was up to the task, turning away all five attempts by the Sundogs. On the other side, Scott Reid was stellar, but was beat by veteran forward and former Bossier-Shreveport Mudbug, Shawn Limpright who made an impressive deke to secure the 4-3 triumph.
