Quad City Mallards News Release
MOLINE, Ill. (October 18, 2011) - The Quad City Mallards of the "AA" Central Hockey League today announced that right wing Mickey Lang, who entered training camp on a tryout agreement, has signed a contract with the team. The Mallards further announced today that defensemen Martin Kubaliak and Quinn Waller have departed the club.
Lang, a 25-year old rookie, impressed during camp last week and then broke loose for two goals and an assist Sunday in the Mallards' 5-4 preseason shootout loss to the Missouri Mavericks at the i wireless Center. Lang's three points were the most produced by any Mallard over the club's two exhibition contests. The 5' 9", 185-pound, Reno, Nevada native was also the only Mallard to successfully convert a penalty shot during Sunday's shootout.
"Mickey's a guy who was recommended to us by [Mallard center] Eric Giosa after Eric played with him this summer and who came in and really stood out from the start of camp," said Mallards coach and general manager David Bell. "He had a lot of jump and showed some good skill and then he was able keep it going in the Ice Breaker [preseason] games over the weekend."
Lang joined the Mallards after spending four standout seasons at Manhattanville College. He scored 16 goals and totaled 27 points last season in 24 games on the way to earning ECAC West All-Conference honors for a second straight season. As a junior in 2009-10, Lang was named to the Division III All-America East First Team after scoring 22 times and piling up 38 points in 26 games. He finished his Valiant career having totaled 47 goals and 93 points in 98 games
Kubaliak exits to return to his family in Alabama, while Waller has chosen to leave hockey to pursue a career in banking.
"They both thought about things after the weekend and told me they wanted to go in a different direction," said Bell. "I understand where they're coming from and respect their decisions."
The Mallards will open their second CHL regular season on home ice Saturday night against the Rapid City Rush. Opening night will kick off at 4:30 p.m. with a Fan Fest outside the i wireless Center featuring Kiss tribute band Strutter, kids' activities, food and beverages and more.
