Rapid City Rush News Release
(Moline, IL) - The Rapid City Rush received some much-needed secondary scoring from defenseman Riley Weselowski and Michael Couch in a 3-2 victory over the Quad City Mallards on Tuesday night. The Mallards fought back to within one goal, but the Rush penalty kill stepped up big time, fighting off a late 5-on-3 to preserve their 25th win of the season. The Rush complete their four-game road trip tomorrow in a tilt against the Bloomington Blaze beginning at 6:05PM MST and the contest can be heard live on 100.3 the FOX or foxradio.com.
The Rush picked up the all-important first goal of the game from defenseman Riley Weselowski, his first since November 24th, snapping a 30-game goalless drought. Just over eight minutes in, a cycle in the corner allowed Garrett Gruenke to slide a cross-ice pass to Weselowski who fired a shot through a myriad of bodies for his third of the season. The advantage lasted ten minutes until Jason Dixon pounced on a loose puck in the slot for his fourth goal of the year and pulling the Mallards even.
The second period was controlled by the Rush who potted the only two goals of the stanza, and nearly doubled the Mallards in shots, 11-6. Defenseman Michael Couch collected his second goal of the season on a wrist shot from the point that trickled through goaltender Neil Conway. The Rush doubled the lead on the powerplay with five minutes remaining in the second. An odd-man chance between Dan Gendur and Jared Brown led to Gendur firing a centering pass that deflected off of Anthony Perdicaro's stick and in past Conway.
With Rapid City holding a 3-1 lead, the Mallards pulled to within a goal while on a 5-on-3 powerplay that resulted in Mickey Lang's team-leading 27th marker of the year. The Mallards had a second two-man advantage in the closing minutes, but the Rush penalty kill held on to preserve the 3-2 regulation win.
