RubberDucks Rebound at Home with Shutout of Richmond Flying Squirrels, 3-0

July 21, 2021 - Eastern League (EL)
Akron RubberDucks News Release

After a tough 9-5 loss in which Richmond scored the final 8 runs of the game, the Akron RubberDucks and Richmond Flying Squirrels came back about 14 hours later to play the second game of this six-game series at Canal Park. Akron rebounded Wednesday afternoon with a shutout by a combined four pitchers and three runs over the final three innings to pick up their first-place their 39th victory of the season.

Turning Point

The RubberDucks finally cracked the scoreboard with their first run in the sixth inning, breaking the pitcher's duel that had been brewing all afternoon. With Ike Freeman on second base, Richie Palacios continued his impressive two-week stretch, smacking a line drive into the gap in right center field that allowed Freeman to cross the plate and give Palacios his 23rd double of the season and 30th run batted in.

Mound Presence

Cody Morris took the ball in his third start of the season and first at Canal Park since returning from a grade-2 Lat muscle strain. Morris once again did not allow a single run to cross the plate in five innings of work, totaling 13 innings without giving up a run. He struck out seven batters today, giving him 16 total for the year. Dakody Clemmer came on in relief of Morris in the sixth. Clemmer continued the dominant performance by Akron pitchers as he allowed just one hit through two innings and struck out one. Jake Miednik added to this performance as he only allowed one hit in his only inning of work. Manuel Alvarez would come on for the save opportunity in the ninth and did just that, finishing the shutout by Akron's pitchers.

Duck Tales

Morris, along with Richmond starter Caleb Killian, were nearly unhittable for five innings. Through five, the teams split four hits apiece. Each pitcher combined threw 13 strikeouts during that span as well. The first run wouldn't come until the bottom of the sixth inning when Richie Palacios hit a double into the gap in right center that brought home Ike Freeman, giving Akron a 1-0 lead. The Ducks would make it back-to-back-to-back innings with a run in the seventh and eighth when Mike Rivera knocked in Jonathan Englemann courtesy of a RBI-single in the seventh and Chris Roller singled home a run in the eighth to make it 3-0.

Notebook

With a line drive single in the fourth inning, Richie Palacios recorded his 65th and 66th hit of the season, placing him third in the Northeast League for hits. Palacios also doubled in the 6th, which was his 23rd of the season and put him 2nd in the league for doubles. Palacios leads the Indians organization with 30 extra base hits in the minor leagues this year. Due to not giving up any runs in five innings of work, Cody Morris has still not allowed a run in his three starts for the RubberDucks this season. Time of Game: 2:33 ... Attendance: 3,803

On the Pond

The RubberDucks and Flying Squirrels will play game number three of the series Thursday at Canal Park with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Adam Scott (0-1, 5.40) will be on the mound for Akron while Richmond will send out Sean Hjelle (3-1, 2.21).
