Akron RubberDucks News Release
(Bowie, MD) April 17, 2014 - Giovanny Urshela's two-out, two-run single in the 8th inning Thursday night lifted the Akron RubberDucks to a 3-2 victory over the Bowie Baysox in the opener of a three-game series at Prince George's Stadium.
Trailing 2-1 going to eighth and facing hard-throwing righthander Marcel Prado (0-1), the RubberDucks rallied with a lead- off double by Jordan Smith and a walk to Francisco Lindor. Both runners moved up on a groundout before Urshela lined a sharp single up the middle for his team-leading 9th and 10th RBI.
The late comeback made a winner of Akron starter Will Roberts (2-1), who worked a season-high seven innings to earn his second straight win. Roberts scattered six hits and allowed two runs in the sixth inning. He walked two and struck out two.
After the RubberDucks (7-7) secured the lead on Urshela's single, righthander Tyler Sturdevant tossed a perfect eighth, striking out two hitters in the process. Lefty Kyle Crockett came on to pitch the ninth and worked around an error and a hit batter to seal the win and pick up his second save.
Tony Wolters drove in Akron's first run with a double off Bowie starter Tim Berry in the 4th . It was Wolters's third double of the season and third RBI, and gave the Ducks a brief 1-0 lead. Urshela was 2-4 on the night. Bryson Myles was the only other Akron starter with two hits, going 2-3.
The RubberDucks will continue the series against the Baysox on Friday evening at 6:35. RHP Kyle Davies (0-1, 1.50) will start for Akron, while LHP Jake Pettit (1-1, 7.20) is the expected starter for Bowie. The game will be broadcast on FOX Sports 1350 AM in Akron and also via www.AkronRubberDucks.com.
