Royals Swept By Cyclones, 3-1

Reading, PA - For the second day in a row, the Reading Royals (16 - 18 - 4 = 34; 4th North Division) were unable to solve the Cincinnati Cyclones' team defense, which was led by goaltender Cedrick Desjardins (16 - 8 - 0; 31/32), as the Cyclones defeated the Royals, 3-1. Cincinnati scored an early first period goal and built a three goal lead while getting solid goaltending-as well as a little help from a couple of crossbars-to hold off what offense the Royals were able to generate. Reading did not break the Desjardins shutout until the 18:41 mark of the third period, when Greg Hogeboom established a new team record with his sixth short-handed goal of the season. For the tenth time in the past thirteen games, the Royals were blanked on the power play, failing to score in five chances with the man advantage. Jeff Pietrasiak (8 - 10 - 0; 22/25), playing in his seventeenth game in the last eighteen for the Royals, took the loss.

In a virtual carbon copy of Saturday night, Cincinnati scored first 5:44 into the game when Barret Ehgoetz fired a snap shot from the right circle. Pietrasiak made the stop but lost sight of the rebound, and, as it fell to his left side, Ehgoetz was able to get to the net and poke it in for his ninth goal of the season. Later in the first, the Royals generated several Grade-A scoring chances, including a point blank shot by Jon Francisco (while the Royals were on the power play) on which Desjardins made a spectacular stop. Shortly after that play, Shawn Collymore beat Desjardins with a snap shot out of the right circle, but the puck quickly ricocheted away from the goal, and it was determined after a review that it had hit the exterior cross-bar rather than the interior net supports.

The Cyclones started the second period with a five-on-three man advantage and converted on the back-end of power play sequence when defenseman Matt Macdonald fired a shot from the right point that Pietrasiak knocked down, but left the rebound to the right side of the net, where Cory Urquhart ripped the loose puck home for his twentieth of the season 1:16 into the period. Cincinnati took a 3-0 lead at the 10:13 mark of the third while the Royals were on the power play. Jason Dietsch chipped a puck out of the defensive zone, which sent Sam Ftorek off to the races on a short-handed breakaway. Ftorek didn't waste the opportunity beating Pietrasiak with a hard snap shot for his eighth goal of the season. In the third, the Royals out-shot the Cyclones 16-9 but were unable to break up the shutout until Hogeboom's short-handed breakaway with just 1:19 remaining. Hogeboom went to the backhand for his twenty first goal of the season.

The Royals take a few days off with the ECHL All-Star break, but return to action on Friday night (7:05 pm) against the Trenton Titans when the organization will induct Ryan Flinn into the Reading Eagle Wall of Honor. The first 2000 fans at that game will receive a commemorative poster courtesy of the Reading Eagle.
