
Royals Sign Pair of All Stars

READING, PA â The Reading Royals, the ECHL affiliate of the Manchester Monarchs, have announced the signing of a pair of all-stars. Reading signed forward Kent Davyduke and defenseman Jonathan Zion to ECHL contracts. Both players are entering their second professional season in 2003-04. Terms of the agreements were not disclosed.
The Royals acquired Davyduke, 25, on August 11 from the Mississippi Sea Wolves in exchange for forwards Alex Kim and Tom Rouleau. Last season, Davyduke appeared in 45 ECHL games with Trenton and Mississippi. The Saskatchewan native scored 19 goals and 56 points while racking up 47 minutes in penalties. He appeared for the Southern Conference All-Stars in the ECHL All-Star Game in Estero, Florida. Davyduke also spent 25 games in the American Hockey League with the Hershey Bears and the Manchester Monarchs. He is currently attending the Monarchs training camp in New Hampshire.
Zion, 22, comes to the Royals via free agency. Zion appeared in 58 games with the former Richmond Renegades. He led all âGades defensemen in scoring posting 14 goals and 52 points. The Nepean, Ontario native finished fifth overall among Richmond scorers while earning himself a place on the ECHL Northern Conference All-Stars. In addition, Zion appeared in 18 games in the American Hockey League with Cincinnati and Portland. He tallied two goals and an assist along with 24 minutes in penalties.
Royals coach Derek Clancey says he is expecting big things out of these two all-stars, "Kent and Jon should be very instrumental in our power play and our overall offense."
"I am expecting these guys to build off their individual success of last season and be even better this year," Clancey said.
The Royals face off their third season on Friday, October 17 in Trenton against the Titans. The Royals home opener is slated for Saturday, October 18 versus the expansion Texas Wildcatters.
