Victoria Royals News Release
Victoria, BC - The Victoria Royals are proud to announce that the club has signed, 2004-born defensive prospects and brothers from Victoria, BC, Jason and Ryan Spizawka to Western Hockey League (WHL) Standard Player Agreements.
Jason Spizawka
The 5-11, 160 lb defenceman was the team's first selection, 19th overall, at the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft in Red Deer, AB in May.
"Jason is a smart prospect defenceman who is an excellent skater," President and General Manager Cameron Hope said. "He has very good vision and plays a strong game in all zones. We are excited to welcome Jason to the Royals' family."
Last season, Spizawka played for the Yale Hockey Academy Bantam Prep team of the Canadian Sport School Hockey League (CSSHL). In 28 contests, he recorded 25 points (2g-23a) to go along with 26 penalty minutes. His 23 assists were tied for the second most on his team. Spizawka also dressed in five postseason contests for Yale and helped his club capture the CSSHL Bantam Prep Championship with a 3-1 victory over Northern Alberta Xtreme.
This past season, the Victoria, BC defender was named the CSSHL's Bantam Prep Division Scholastic Player of the Year.
Ryan Spizawka
Ryan, Jason's twin brother, was Victoria's seventh round pick, 137th overall at the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft.
"Ryan is a mobile defenceman who has shown the ability to play forward," Hope said. "He knows how to be effective at both ends of the ice, he moves the puck well, and I think we are just starting to see his talents. We are pleased to have him join our organization."
He spent the 2018-19 season as a defenceman for the Yale Hockey Academy Bantam Prep Team in the CSSHL. Over 28 contests for Yale, Spizawka collected 20 points (8g-12a). The 5-9, 158 lb defenceman won the 2018-19 CSSHL Bantam Prep Championship with Yale.
The Spizawka brothers played their minor hockey for the Victoria Racquet Club Minor Hockey Association.
