Royals Sign Forward Michael Cohen
September 11, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Reading Royals News Release
Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with forward Michael Cohen. Last season, Cohen (5'10/189) (23), who will be entering his second full season of pro, split his rookie year between the Johnstown Chiefs and the Pensacola Ice Pilots of the ECHL, scoring a total of ten goals and assisting on twenty-five others (thirty-five points), while registering forty-four penalty minutes in sixty-five total games.
Cohen, who hails from Williamsville, New York, began his pro career in March of 2007 when he joined the Royals for seven games after the completion of his senior season at Canisius College. In his short stint with Reading, Cohen scored his first goal as a pro (in a 4-3 win in Cincinnati on March 7, 2007) and racked up a five game point streak (1g-5a=6pts) before returning to Canisius to complete his schooling. Cohen had an exceptional four year playing career for the Golden Griffins, as he led the team in scoring during his first three seasons and put up a total of 100 points (42g - 58a = 100 pts) in 134 college games.
Last year, Cohen started with the Johnstown Chiefs-and started particularly well against the Royals, scoring a goal to give the Chiefs a 3-0 lead in the second period of their second game of the season, which happened to be against Reading but in which the Royals came back and won, 6-4. Cohen proceeded to rack-up eleven points in his first thirteen games for the Chiefs, but was ultimately traded to the Pensacola Ice Pilots in early January for power forward Mike Sgroi. From late January through late February, Cohen, who had seven multi-point games last year, went on another spree-this time with the Ice Pilots-racking up fifteen points over a span of fourteen games (January 27 - February 24, 2008).
The Royals open the 2008-09 regular season against the Elmira Jackals on Friday, October 17, 2008 at First Arena in Elmira, New York. The Royals' home opener is set for Saturday, October 25, 2008, when the Johnstown Chiefs visit the Sovereign Center. Royals' full Season Tickets and Total Choice Flex Plans are now on sale.
