Reading Royals News Release
Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, today announced that the team has signed defenseman Jared Ross. Last season, Ross (6'0/199) (25), who hails from Stoney Island, Nova Scotia, scored three goals, assisted on two others (five points), and picked up twenty-nine penalty minutes in twenty-one regular season games for the Royals. Ross, who will be entering his second pro season, also played forty-eight regular season games for the Providence Bruins of the AHL, where he scored a goal, picked up six assists (seven points) and registered fourteen penalty minutes. In mid-April last year, Ross rejoined the Royals for the team's post-season run, playing eleven playoff games during which he scored three goals and picked up two assists (five points).
"We're extremely pleased to have signed Jared," said Royals Head Coach Larry Courville. "He's an impact defenseman with a cannon for a shot. He's a tremendous young man with high character, great leadership ability and excellent hockey sense."
Ross started last season on assignment from Providence to Reading during the Royals' training camp in early October. Prior to the start of the ECHL regular season, Ross received the first of what would be three call-ups to Providence during the year. He was re-assigned to Reading on October 25, 2009, and in his sixth game with the Royals (on November) he bagged his first goal as a pro. In fact, that night, Ross rang off back-to-back third period goals for the Royals to fuel a comeback effort in what proved to be a 5-4 shootout victory at the Sovereign Center over the defending Kelly Cup Champion South Carolina Stingrays. Ross was recalled from Reading in early December and (except for one game in late January) played the remainder of the season with the P-Bruins. After the conclusion of the AHL regular season, Ross re-joined the Royals on April 12. In his first game back with the team, Ross again struck for a pair of goals, including what has to be considered one of the most dramatic goals in Royals' team history at the 14:37 mark of the third period to complete a three-goal come-from-behind 7-6 victory over the Florida Everblades in Game One of the American Conference Semi-Finals-a victory which fueled the only playoff sweep in Royals' team history.
Prior to turning pro, Ross played four years of college hockey at St. Lawrence University, where three times he was named to the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference All-Academic Team. Ross, who registered forty-eight points (22g-26a48pts) and 138 penalty minutes in 134 total games for the Saints, served as the team captain in his senior season, when he received the Terry Slater Perseverance Award for his performance with the team. That season Ross also received the Brian "Jinx" Doyle Memorial Award for leadership, character and athletic ability.
Ross is the fifteenth player (seven forwards, eight defensemen) announced as signed to an ECHL contract by the Royals for the 2010-11 season. He is the eighth player announced as signed by Reading who played some portion of the season last year with the Royals. (Ryan Cruthers, Ben Gordon, Olivier Labelle, Steven Kaunisto, Rob Kwiet, Todd Perry, and Andrew Sarauer are the others.)
The Royals host the team's tenth anniversary home opener on Saturday, October 23, 2010 (7:05 pm), when the Elmira Jackals visit the Sovereign Center. Also, be sure to catch the Royals' season opener live from Trenton, New Jersey, (@ Trenton Devils Saturday, October 16, 2010 @ 7:00 pm)-and all of the team's away games this year-on Royals TV exclusively on BCTV courtesy of Boscov's Travel, and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines.
