LAST NIGHT: Denny Bautista (0-2) was charged with 7 runs in 3.0 innings, as Iowa jumped out to a 7-1 lead and hung on for an 8-5 win. Bautista surrendered a 2-run homer to Luis Montanez in the bottom of the 1st, wiping out Omaha's 1-0 lead. The Cubs scored 2 more runs in the 3rd on Felix Pie's triple to make it 4-1. Bautista gave up 2 singles and a walk to begin the 4th inning. Eddie Yarnall allowed a sacrifice fly and Ryan Theriot's 2-run triple, which closed the book on Bautista. Chad Allen went 2-for-4 and drove in 4 runs for Omaha, 3 coming on his 8th home run of the season. The homer came off Ryan O'Malley (4-3), who was tagged for 4 runs (3 earned) in 5.2 innings, but picked up the win. Scott Williamson finished with 2.0 scoreless innings for his 1st save.

ROYALS REPORT: Bautista pitched 6.0 scoreless innings in his 1st start for Omaha June 11. In 2 starts since then, he's 0-2 with an 18.00 ERA (12 ER in 6.0 IP). The 25-year old right-hander began the season with KC, going 0-2 with a 5.66 ERA in 8 games (7 starts). *** Allen is hitting at a torrid .413 pace (33-80) over his last 21 games and has 6 RBI in the past 3 contests. His .338 average on the season ranks 6th in the PCL. *** Second baseman Fernando Cortez, who was acquired this week from Tampa Bay in the J.P.Howell deal, made his Omaha debut last night. He went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. The left-handed hitting Cortez batted .222 in 60 games with Triple-A Durham this season. *** Chris Clapinski had 2 hits last night and has hit in 4 straight games, going 5-for-15 (.333). *** Mike Aviles also had a 2-hit game Thursday. Over his last 6 tilts, the Royals third baseman is batting .292 (7-24). *** Aaron Guiel is hitting just .176 (9-51) over the past 14 games, with 1 homer and 3 RBI. That stretch has dipped his average 28 points to .232. *** Paul Phillips is in a 4-for-31 (.129) slide over his last 9 contests, causing his average to fall 23 points to .263. *** Ruben Gotay is in a 2-for-23 (.087) funk over his past 6 games. *** As a team, the Royals are hitting .226 through the 1st 10 games of this road trip, scoring only 27 runs in going 3-7. In the month of June, Omaha has a .215 team batting average and has scored 57 runs in 20 games (2.85 per game), going 6-14. *** Leo Nunez fired 2.0 scoreless innings of relief last night, extending his scoreless streak to 7.0 innings over his last 4 outings. He gave up 1 run in 1.1 innings in his 1st appearance with Omaha on May 27 and nothing since then, posting a 1.08 ERA in his 5 games.

STARTERS: RH Seth Etheron (1-1, 6.30) vs. LH Les Walrond (7-2, 3.46)

Etherton makes his 3rd start for Omaha. The 29-year old right-hander's last start was last Saturday at Memphis, when he combined with 2 relievers on a 7-hitter in a 1-0 win (5.1 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K). Etherton made 2 starts for KC, going 1-1 with a 9.39 ERA. KC acquired him on May 26 from the Padres for a player to be named later or cash. He had been signed by KC as a free agent last November, but was selected by San Diego in the Major League portion of the 2005 Rule 5 Draft on December 8. Etherton opened this season with the Padres' Triple-A club at Portland, going 2-2 with a 4.38 ERA in 9 starts. In 2005, he made 3 starts for Oakland in May, going 1-1 with a 6.62 ERA. He spent most of last season with Sacramento, where he was 7-7 with a 2.72 ERA in 20 games (19 starts). Besides Oakland, he has pitched in the big leagues with Cincinnati (2003) and Anaheim (2000). Etherton attended the University of Southern California from 1995-1998 and was named Outstanding Pitcher for the Trojans 3 years in a row (1996-1998). He was selected by St. Louis in the 9th round of the 1997 draft, but did not sign. He signed with Anaheim as the Angels' 1st round pick (18th overall) in the 1998 draft.
