Victoria Royals News Release
Victoria, BC - In a Tuesday night matchup at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Center the Victoria Royals took on the Prince George Cougars. The game marked the Cougars' first visit to Victoria since the franchise relocated to Prince George prior to the 1994 season. The Royals gave Keith Hamilton the start in net while the Cougars countered with Drew Owsley.
The game got off to a tentative start as neither team wanted to give up an early advantage. Prince George would break the deadlock at the 14:36 mark off of a Reid Jackson marker. The Cougars' defenseman accepted a Daulton Siwak pass at the right point and fired a low shot on net that beat Hamilton low to the stick side. Victoria answered a mere three minutes later as Jamie Crooks fired a shot on Owsley that rebounded into the air. The Royals' forward followed up on the rebound and batted home his team leading 26th goal of the season at 17:36. The period would end with the teams tied at 1-1.
Victoria came out strong in the second period and would take the lead within the first two minutes of the frame. Mike Forsyth entered the Cougars' zone and fed Brandon Magee who snapped a shot over the glove of Owsley at the 1:25 mark. Prince George's Greg Fraser tied the game before the 10 minute mark after he accepted a pass from behind the net and fired a shot from the slot that beat a screened Hamilton at 7:24. Siwak would put the Cougars up 3-2 as he circled out of the left corner and snapped a shot from the left face-off dot that snuck under the arm of the Royals' netminder at 15:16. Prince George would carry the 3-2 lead into the second intermission with the shots tied 22 apiece.
Both teams would trade chances to open the third period. Just prior to the halfway point, Prince George would go up 4-2 after a loose puck bounced in front of the Victoria net and was shoveled between the legs of Hamilton by Ricard Blidstrand at 9:23 to round out the scoring. Cougars 4 Royals 2.
Victoria went 0/1 0.00% on the power play, while Prince George was 0/1 0.00%. The Cougars outshot the Royals 34-32.
The Royals next home game is on Wednesday, February 1st when they take on the Prince George Cougars in the second game of a two game set. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.
