Burlington Sock Puppets News Release

Bluefield, WV- In a game that lasted just five innings due to weather, the Bluefield Blue Jays prevailed in a one run game over the Burlington Royals, 2-1. Matt Murray takes his fourth loss of the season, throwing every pitch for the visitors until the game was called. The winning pitcher, Myles Jaye, improves to 3-3, going all five innings. The Royals will head to Kingston for a three game series beginning on Friday.

Dalton Pompey singled to lead off the bottom of the first inning, and then stole second. He would move up on a flyout from Peter Mooney, and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat off Andy Fermin, giving the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead. With runners on first and third in the top of the next inning, Anthony Howard dropped down a bunt, scoring Jorge Bonifacio, while being thrown out himself at first.

Bluefield took the lead on the last play before the rain delay that eventually ended the game. Mooney singled home Daniel Arcila from third to make it 2-1. After a 50 minute delay, the game was called.

Justin Trapp and Kenny Swab each recorded a hit, going 1-for-2. The Royals, who had just two hits through their five at bats, got their only run from Bonifacio.

For the home team, Mooney went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Fermin knocked in the other run, despite going 0-for-1.

Each team used only their starter on the mound in the shortened contest. Murray went four and two third innings, giving up two runs on six hits, while striking out four. Jaye tossed five innings, and allowed one run on two hits, with a career-high eight strikeouts.

Burlington travels to take on the Kingsport Mets starting on Friday. The Mets swept the Royals at Burlington Athletic Stadium in the last series between the two.
