Moncton Wildcats News Release
The out of town coach Moncton Wildcats fans love to hate will be back at the Coliseum this Saturday. Sir Patrick brings his Remparts to Moncton to tangle with the Wildcats. Moncton and Quebec are two of the top five teams in the QMJHL this season.
Roy, an NHL Hall of Fame goaltender and Stanley Cup winner incurred the wrath of Wildcats fans three years ago and Moncton fans have memories like elephants.
The distaste for the head coach of the Remparts began during the Memorial Cup championships played in Moncton in May 2006.
The Wildcats, Memorial Cup hosts in 2006, had traded with Victoriaville for Josh Tordjman , one of the outstanding netminders in the QMJHL in December 2005. As the national championships got underway, Roy, whose Remparts had lost the Q championship to the Wildcats just a week before, termed the Moncton goalie, "second rate".
Tordjman, who had won a list of honours in Victoriaville and Moncton, became a fan favorite wearing the Cat jersey. He'd performed above expectation during the Presidents Cup race and was primed for the Memorial Cup tournament. Again, his goaltending abilities were evident as the Wildcats made it to the championship game against Patrick and his Remparts.
Roy's comments to the media, regarding Tordjman, got national attention. They were seen by many in the hockey world, as a slap against a proven major junior puck stopper.
Local hockey fans have not forgotten Roy's remarks and he has been greeted with a chorus of boos each time he's returned to the Coliseum since May 2006. It's a sure bet, the rafters will reverberate with Bronx cheers when Mr. Roy steps foot on Wildcats ice this Saturday.
