Brockton, Mass. - Brockton starter Wayne Lundgren threw eight strong innings for the victory as the Rox defeated the New Jersey Jackals, 5-4, in a Can-Am League matchup at Campanelli Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The win was Lundgren's 26th in his career as a member of the Rox, tying him with John Kelly for most all-time victories. The Rox won three out of four games in the series against the Jackals, heading into an important four-game set against Quebec starting on Tuesday.

The Jackals (12-16) drew first blood in the third inning; after CF Jeff Grose walked, 2B Argenis Reyes brought him home with a two-run home run, his first of the season.

The Brockton bats came alive in the fifth, halving the New Jersey lead with C Chris Grossman's home run to lead off the inning. The Rox (17-10) then scored three more in the sixth, first on an RBI single from 2B Scott Wearne. DH Clyde Williams then battled Jackals reliever Mike Pontius on an 11-pitch at-bat, finally bringing home Wearne on an RBI single of his own, before Grossman made it 4-2, Rox, with a sacrifice fly.

New Jersey came right back in the seventh, tying the game up on C Jordan Newton's two-run double. Brockton was finally able to take the lead for good in its half of the seventh, when 3B Derek Kinzler singled, moved to third on a single by SS Dominic Ramos, and scored on CF Chris Valencia's sacrifice fly to make it a 5-4 game.

Hunter Davis came on in relief of Lundgren in the ninth and earned his second save of the season, shutting down the Jackals in order.

Wearne, RF Keith Brachold, and Williams each had 2-for-4 afternoons for the Rox, while SS Mike DeJesus went 3-for-4 for New Jersey.

Lundgren (4-1) gave up four earned runs, scattering nine hits and striking out eight on the day. Edgar Estanga (0-1) took the loss in relief for the Jackals, allowing the go-ahead run in the seventh.

Win the win and Quebec's 9-3 loss to visiting Pittsfield on Sunday, the Rox move to just 1.5 games back in the standings with the series between the two teams at Campanelli Stadium beginning on Tuesday at 6:05 p.m. Mike Smith (3-1) will face Michel Simard in the series opener.
