Brockton Rox News Release
(Brockton, Mass. - July 20, 2011) - Mike Torres' two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh gave the Brockton Rox (4-0, 30-20) their first lead of the game en route to a 6-4 win over the New York Federals (0-4, 10-41), completing the series sweep and matching the Rox franchise record of eleven straight wins at home.
Dustin Birosak (6-0) and Luis Pardo (0-5) traded scoreless frames through three innings, before Brad Jackson put the Feds on the board with a two-run homer in the fourth. Jacob Fabry added a run against Birosak on an RBI single in the fifth, giving New York a 3-0 lead.
Brockton cut into the deficit in the bottom of the fifth frame on a solo round-tripper by Chris Grossman and a sacrifice bunt from Dominic Ramos that scored Shawn Williams from third, making the score 3-2.
Steve Detwiler's second hit of the night, drove home Derrick Pyles in the top of the sixth, putting the Federals ahead once again by two, but that would be the last run the visitors would scratch in the final four frames.
Birosak went seven innings, allowing four runs on eight hits in the victory to tie Mike Smith for the team lead with six wins.
Hoping to acquire his first win of the season, Pardo returned to work the seventh with a two-run lead in hand. The inning began with Pardo hitting Grossman and then walking Ramos two outs later. With two on and two out, Chris Valencia singled, knocking in Grossman to cut the lead to one. He then stole second base, before Torres smacked a base hit, plating both Ramos and Valencia to give the Rox their first lead of the night, 5-4.
Pardo lasted a season high seven frames in the loss, giving up six runs (five earned) on seven hits, while striking out and walking two.
After Jake Loye tossed a clean eighth frame, Brockton tacked on an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning, before Jake Hale emerged from the bullpen to close out his third game in as many nights, notching his fifth save of the season.
Williams extended his consecutive games on-base streak to 24, while Valenciacollected a hit in his 18 th straight (11 multi-hit games).
The Rox were fleet footed in the series, swiping 16 bases in 18 attempts, including going 3-for-3 in the seventh and eighth innings of Wednesday night's ballgame. In addition, eleven of the base stealers eventually came around to score.
Grossman stole his fifth base of the season, which ties a career high, while Valencia continues to lead the league in swipes, collecting his 24th.
The homestand rolls along to Thursday night as Freddy Flores (4-3, 3.41) is scheduled to take the hill against Alex Smith (5-2, 3.22) in the opener of a three game series against the Newark Bears. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. on a Heineken Thirsty Thursday at Campanelli Stadium.
