Brockton Rox News Release
WEST HAVEN, CT - LHP Rolando Valles fired 8.2 scoreless innings for the New Haven County Cutters and RHP Andy Weimer struck out SS Mike Scanzano to end the game as the Cutters beat the Rox 1-0 tonight at Yale Field before 1,279 in attendance. LHP Rolando Viera gave up just one run in seven innings on the hill for Brockton, striking out 10 batters and giving up just three hits. The teams combined for just a single hit after the third inning until the the ninth, when 2B Matt Brunson had bunt single in the ninth inning. The single for Brunson extended his hitting streak to six games and he has reached in all 13 games he has played. The Rox and Cutters have split the first two games of the series, with Brockton falling to 10-12 overall and New Haven County improving to 10-11.
Viera struck out three batters in the first, but in the second inning he allowed a leadoff single to RF Horace Lawrence and an RBI double to CF Doug Vroman. Vroman's double plated Lawrence and was also the final hit in the game for the Cutters. Viera struck out six batters through four innings, at one point retired 15 of 16 batters and nine straight.
The Rox best opportunity came in the third inning. Scanzano singled with one out and C Jason Radwan doubled to put runners at second and third with one out, but two pop-outs ended the frame. In the ninth, Valles retired the first two hitters before Brunson's single. Cutters' Manager Mike Church removed Valles and called up Weimer, who struck out Scanzano to end the game. Tomorrow the Rox send RHP Robert Averette to the hill to face RHP Courtney Hall at 2:05 at Yale Field.
