Tornadoes win 5-4 before largest-ever Spirit crowd

June 17, 2006 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
North Shore Spirit News Release

The Spirit hosted their largest crowd ever on Saturday night, but unfortunately the team couldn't deliver a victory to the Fraser Field faithful, as they dropped their second straight decision, 5-4, to Worcester.

There were 4,605 fans in attendance on Saturday night to see the Spirit come up just short against the Tornadoes. With the loss, the Spirit fell to 11-8 on the season, while Worcester moved to 12-10.

North Shore actually held the lead for much of the game, but in the end it was the Tornadoes that claimed the win.

The Spirit took advantage of some shaky first-inning defense from the Tornadoes to grab the early lead. Garrett Weir reached on an error to get things started for the Spirit offense and came around to score on a fielders choice from Vic Davilla. After reaching on a double, B.J. Weed scored the second Spirit run on an error by the Worcester pitcher.

Worcester cut the Spirit lead in half in the top of the third inning. Jeff Lahair led off the inning with a solo home run to open the scoring for the Tornadoes. An error and a walk opened the door for more scoring in the inning, but Spirit starting pitcher Chris Farley was able to escape from the jam without further damage.

The Spirit answered with another run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Andrew Wishy led off the inning with a single and came around to score on an RBI single from Jon deVries.

Chris Rowan padded the Spirit lead with a two-out solo home run in the fifth inning. The Spirit appeared to be in control of the game at that point, but a Worcester rally would change that. After struggling for much of the contest, the Tornadoes bats came to life late in the game.

Worcester took its first lead of the game with a three-run seventh inning. Phil Lorent got things started with a leadoff single and came around to score on a double from Patrick Perry to pull Worcester within one run of the Spirit. Jeff Beauregard put the Tornadoes ahead two batters later with a two-run home run.

That was all the scoring that Worcester would need in this game. The Spirit threatened in the final two innings, but they couldn't get the big hit with runners in scoring position.

Worcester reliever Elvis Jiminez allowed two runs on four hits in five innings of work to earn the victory, while David Byard got the save. Spirit reliever Dennis Robinson suffered the loss.

The Spirit will be back in action for the final game of the series tomorrow at 2 p.m. Jarrad Lavergne will take the mound for the Spirit, while Reid Willett gets the start for the Tornadoes.
