Brockton Rox News Release
LYNN, MA --- Can-Am ERA leader John Kelly did not allow an earned run over seven innings as host North Shore (12-11) took the rubber match of a three game series with Brockton (14-13), 3-1.
The entirety of Brockton's offensive output occurred in the top of the first inning. Saul Bustos doubled with one out, eventually scoring on a throwing error. The Rox would have other opportunities later in the game, but Kelly and relievers Alex Herrera and Ryan McCally shut the door each time.
Meanwhile, Brockton starter Brad Guy, making his final start for the Rox before flying overseas to play in Taiwan, pitched seven strong innings that were marred only by solo runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth frames.
In the bottom of the fourth, Brian Macchi collected a one-out double. Guy rebounded to strike out Eric Storey, but Steve Carter followed with an RBI single to knot the game at 1.
With two out in the fifth, Travis Oglesby gave the Spirit the lead for good. The North Shore designated hitter sent a 1-1 Guy offering sailing over the right field wall, his seventh home run of the year.
The hosts closed out the scoring in the next inning with another two-out tally. After Macchi popped out, Storey singled and stole second. Two batters later, shortstop Yuri Sanchez made the score 3-1 with a run-scoring base hit to right.
Brockton had one last chance when rookie Brad Rosenblat drew a walk from Herrera with two outs in the ninth. Spirit manager John Kennedy brought in McCally from the bullpen and the closer coaxed an innocent groundball from Mike Scanzano to pick up his fourth save.
Guy (0-2) received the tough-luck defeat, while Kelly (4-1) watched his ERA drop to an amazing 1.36.
The Rox end their second roadtrip of the season with a 2-4 record. They now return home for ten straight games at Campanelli Stadium, starting with a weekend series against the New Jersey Jackals. Friday night's game, with Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd (0-0, 3.20) on the mound for Brockton, is sold out.
