Brockton Rox News Release
BROCKTON, MA - (August 6, 2009) - The Brockton Rox split a four-game series with the New Jersey Jackals, dropping the Thursday night finale 6-4 when a ninth-inning comeback effort fell short. 3B Phillip Cuadrado hit a two-run home run in the ninth to pull the Rox within two runs, but New Jersey held on for the victory.
New Jersey's offense set the pace early and chipped away with runs in five of the first six innings of the game. All of the runs were scored against RHP Jeff Long, who left after six innings having allowed nine hits, with a walk and four strikeouts. Eight of the Jackals nine hits against Long were singles, with DH Quinn Stewart's two-run triple accounting for the only extra-base hit of the game.
The Rox offense sputtered against New Jersey LHP Giuseppe Granitto, who scattered four hits over six innings, and gave up just one run. Brockton scored its only run against the lefty in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by CF Chris Valencia, which plated C Chris Grossman. Grossman had started the inning with a double, and had three hits on the night including two doubles.
After RHP Matt Zachary provided three brilliant innings in relief, including striking out the side in order in the eighth inning, the Rox attempted a late-inning comeback. Grossman's second double of the game in the seventh inning provided the second run as Cuadrado scored from first base on the play.
In the ninth inning, 2B Melvin Falu was hit by a pitch to start the frame. Cuadrado then homered off the top of the wall in left field to pull the Rox within two runs. After Grossman singled, and SS Dominic Ramos reached on a fielder's choice (forcing out Grossman at second base), the Jackals turned to the league's leading closer LHP Rusty Tucker.
Tucker came in and got two outs with three pitches to Valencia. On his second pitch, Jackals' catcher Matt Lauderdale picked off Ramos at first base for the second out. Tucker then struck out Valencia looking to end the game on the very next pitch as the comeback fizzled quickly.
The Rox welcome the Worcester Tornadoes to Campanelli Stadium to begin a three-game series on Friday night. RHP Wayne Lundgren (5-5, 2.78 ERA) will start for Brockton. Friday night's first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM, and tickets are available at www.brocktonrox.com or through the Rox Ticket Office at (508) 559-7070.
