June 29, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
St. Cloud Rox News Release
Mankato, MN-- Fresh off of their first day off of the season, the St. Cloud Rox were a little slow out of the gate in game number one of their doubleheader with the Mankato Moondogs, as they fell by a final score of 13-11.
Trailing 2-0 after one inning, Austin Athmann (University of Minnesota) hit his third homerun of the season, a three run blast over the left field wall to give the Rox a one run lead.Â
Mankato quickly answered, as they retook the lead 4-3 with two more runs in the bottom of the second. Mankato continued to pile on runs, and took a 12-3 lead into the top of the 6th inning.
Michael Strem (Boston College) went 2-4 on the game, and his double in the top of the 6th inning scored Kyle Serrano (Colorado Mesa University) from first.
Despite trailing 13-5 into the 8th inning, St. Cloud tried to put together another late rally, as they put up 6 runs in the 8th to cut the Moondogs lead to just 2. Brandon Benson (Georgia College & State University) went 2-3 in the first game, including an RBI single in the top of the 8th inning.Â
The Moondogs were able to finish the inning without allowing any more runs, and they held off the Rox to take game number one from Franklin Rogers Park.
Game 2---
The Rox wasted no time in game number two, as they got things going right away in the first inning and jumped out to a 3-0 lead after 1 half inning of play. Connor Crane (Mcneese St.) got the offense going with an RBI double to score two, and later came around to score on a Michael Strem RBI single.
Reese Gregory (SCSU) pitched very well for the Rox, as he lasted 6 innings, giving up just 4 hits and 1 run while striking out 6.
Austin Athmann had himself quite the day in both games, as he hit 2 homeruns in the two games, and had 9 RBI's.
St. Cloud responded nicely and added timely hitting throughout game number two to earn a split in the two-game double header in Mankato.
The Rox return to action tomorrow night in Alexandria, as they play the Blue Anchors at 7:05 PM on the last day of the first half of the season.
