BROCKTON, MA - (August 30, 2009) - The Brockton Rox split a an afternoon double header with the Worcester Tornadoes at Campanelli Stadium on Sunday. After a brilliantly pitched first game which resulted in a 2-1 loss, the Rox earned the split in the night cap with RF Keith Brachold's grand slam, and five shutout innings from RHP John Kelly.

In the first game, Brockton's RHP Freddy Flores dueled with Worcester's RHP Chris Farley and each starter went the distance. The offenses traded sparse runs early on. Worcester's 1B Chris Colabello scored on a two-out RBI single in the second inning to put the Tornadoes in front 1-0.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Rox offense tallied its only run of the game against Farley when CF Chris Valencia drove in 3B Phillip Cuadrado with an RBI groundout to tie the game.

The third inning provided more two-out damage by Worcester. With two outs, 3B Greg Lemon drove a ball to deep right field. Rox outfielder RF Keith Brachold crashed in to the wall in an attempt to make the catch. The ball bounced out of his glove, and Lemon stood at third with a triple. He scored on an RIB single by the next batter and Worcester led 2-0.

Flores went on to retire the final 13 batters he faced, but took the 2-1 loss. Farley allowed two walks and two doubles after the second inning and earned the win.

In the nightcap, pitching dominated the early innings. Scoreless in the bottom of the third inning, SS Dominic Ramos tripled into the right-field corner to score Valencia from first with two outs and give the Rox a 1-0 lead. Two innings later, with another run already in and the bases loaded, Brachold belted his 12th home run of the season into the right field Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center Picnic Pavilion for a grand slam. Brockton led 6-0 after the grand slam.

Meanwhile, Rox starter RHP John Kelly was showing signs of his previously dominant self. Kelly struck out six in five innings, including his 1,400th career strikeout in the third inning. He scattered just three hits in five shutout innings to record his first win of the season. RHP Keith Noe and RHP Adam Piechowski combined for the final two innings in the game. Worcester scored its only run in the ninth off Piechowski to make the final score 6-1.

Brockton hosts New Hampshire on Monday at Campanelli Stadium to start a three-game series. RHP Wayne Lundgren (8-5, 2.83 ERA) will start for the Rox. Monday night's first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM.
