Worcester Splits, Drops Series, Clinches Playoffs

August 30, 2009 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release

BROCKTON, MA--- It was a pair of complete games in the opening contest and grand slam in game two. The Tornadoes and Rox end up splitting the double dip 2-1 (Worcester), and 6-1 (Brockton). With the win in game one, and NH getting swept in their double header, the Tornadoes became the fourth team to punch their ticket to the 2009 playoffs.

Both Freddy Flores (5-5) and Chris Farley (5-4) went the full seven in the first half of the twin bill, but Farley was just a touch better. The Athol, Massachusetts native struck out four and walked a pair en route to his first win since August third. Carlos Sosa, who now a team leading owns sixty-four RBIs, drove in the go-ahead and eventual winning run.

Player-Coach John Kelly (1-3) got the pill in finale for Brockton in his second start off the disable list; both against the Tornadoes. Through five scoreless innings Kelly disposed of six Worcester hitters, including his 1,400-career strikeout, to pick up his first win of 2009. Tornadoes lefty Ryan Lobban surrendered a run in the third, but looked good until the fifth when he loaded the bases with none out and gave up a grand slam bomb to right field courtesy of Keith Brachold (12). It was Brachold's third homerun in his last four games against Worcester.

Trailing 6-0 in the top of the seventh, Nick Salotti drove in the only Worcester run for his thirty-ninth RBI. Keith Noe and Adam Piechowski nailed down Kelly's win for Brockton.

Worcester will take the day off Monday before heading to Little Falls for the final time of the regular season in what could be a potential first round preview against the Jackals at 7:05pm Tuesday evening.
