Brockton Rox News Release
(Brockton, Mass. - July 6, 2011) - The series opener between the Brockton Rox (18-19) and the New York Federals (8-29) took only one hour and 51 minutes to complete as Julian Sampson (3-2) dominated his way to a 1-0 victory at Campanelli Stadium.
Sampson worked masterfully through eight innings, tossing 90 pitches, while scattering just four hits and allowing only two runners to reach scoring position. He struck out five and walked one in his third consecutive quality start, yielding his first win since June 15th.
Jake Loye (0-3) absorbed another tough defeat, after pitching well against the Rox in his last two starts. Loye lasted a complete eight innings, while allowing one run on seven hits. Over his last 14 and 1/3 innings against Brockton, the righthander has now given up just one earned run, despite taking the loss both times.
The Rox scratched their lone tally against Loye in first inning. Chris Valencia opened the frame with one of his game-high three hits and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mike Torres. Keith Brachold then grounded out moving Valencia to third, before Trey Hernandez smacked an RBI double, plating the only run of the game.
Newly acquired closer Francisco Cruceta (1) slammed the door in the ninth inning, striking out two while collecting his first save of the season.
The win is tied for the fastest in Rox team history, the other occasion being a 2-0 shutout over Sussex on August 1, 2010. The victory was also just three minutes shy of the quickest game in league history and more importantly ends a season long five game skid for Brockton.
Robert Bono (2-0, 3.68) takes the hill for the Rox in game two, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. on Heineken Thirsty Thursday. He will be opposed by righty Will Hassett (2-3, 3.41) as Brockton looks to climb back to .500 with a win. All of the action can be heard live on AM 1460 WXBR and on brocktonrox.com.
