New Jersey Jackals News Release
Quebec City, QC - First baseman Kris Sanchez launched the New Jersey Jackals' second grand slam in as many games, but it wasn't enough as the Jackals fell to the first-place Quebec Capitales, 11-5, in Wednesday night's series opener at Stade Municipal.
The Jackals opened the scoring in the first inning, loading the bases with two outs on walks by Myron Leslie and Nick Giarraputo and a single by Mike Jones before Sanchez lined a grand slam over the batters eye to give New Jersey a 4-0 advantage against Quebec starter John Mariotti. However, New Jersey managed just one run the rest of the way when Jones led off the sixth inning with a single and came plateward later in the frame on a double play.
The Capitales took the lead for good in the bottom of the second, plating six runs against New Jersey southpaw Ryan Kulik. Trailing 4-0, Quebec got on the board with a two-run double to right center off the bat of Robert Wagner to make it 4-2. After a Goefrey Tomlinson RBI double off the center field wall made it a one-run game, Quebec tied the game on a Sebastien Boucher single and took the lead on Kulik's third wild pitch of the inning. A run-scoring single off the bat of Rene Leveret made it 6-4.
Quebec tacked on two runs in the fourth and two in the fifth before capping the scoring in the bottom of the sixth.
Mariotti (3-0) allowed five runs on seven hits in five innings, but earned the win. Kulik (2-2), who took the loss, was tagged for 10 runs on 11 hits over 4 2/3 innings.
Sanchez added an eighth-inning double to finish the night 2-for-3. For Quebec, Boucher went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored while Tomlinson stroked a pair of run-scoring doubles in four at-bats.
The Jackals and Capitales play the second contest of their four-game series on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. when New Jersey sends Can-Am League wins leader Isaac Pavlik (7-0, 2.02 ERA) to the mound for his ninth start of the season against Quebec right-hander Matthew Rusch (3-3, 3.04 ERA) at Stade Municipal. Cody Chrusciel has the call on the live webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at jackals.com.
