Rox Score Late Run to Defeat Honkers

(Rochester, MN) - The Rochester Honkers began an eight-game road trip with a 3-2 loss to the St. Cloud Rox on Tuesday June 25, at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, MN.

Chris Paul, Tim Colwell, and Adam Martin delivered consecutive singles in the bottom of the third inning to spark a two-run inning for the Rox to take a 2-0 lead after three innings of play. The two runs, one earned, were allowed by Honkers starting pitcher Logan Spitzack (St. Cloud State.) Spitzack allowed five hits and struck out three in 5.2 innings. Rox starting pitcher Michael Healey pitched two scoreless innings.

Reid Roper (Illinois) and Kevin Barker (UC Davis) led off the top of the fifth inning with back-to-back singles and a sacrifice bunt from Jarad Watts (Bethel University) moved both runners up. Roper scored on a sacrifice fly from Tucker Tharp (Kansas) to cut the St. Cloud lead in half.

Roper picked up his third hit of the game with a lead-off double in the top of the seventh inning. Barker moved him over to third on a sacrifice bunt and he later scored on a second sacrifice fly from Tharp to tie the game at 2-2. Roper led the Honkers offense by going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

Martin drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the eighth for St. Cloud and was lifted for pinch-runner Clay Williamson. Williamson advanced to second base on a single by Luke Weber, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored when Charlie Morgan reached on a fielder's choice to regain a late 3-2 lead for St. Cloud.

Tyler Eppler (Sam Houston State) took the loss (1-1) for the Honkers. He allowed one run on one hit in 2.2 innings of relief. Reese Gregory picked up the win (1-0) for the Rox as he pitched a scoreless eighth inning in relief. Adam Maxon struck out the side in the ninth inning to earn his third save of the season.

The two teams will finish up the two-game series Wednesday June 26 at 7:05 p.m. in St. Cloud. Matt Kent (Texas A&M) is slated to make the start for Rochester (15-11,) while Kyle Davis (Colorado Mesa University) is scheduled to start for St. Cloud (11-16.) After the series with the Rox, the Honkers will play three games in Alexandria and three games in Willmar before returning home to Mayo Field to host the Rox on Tuesday, July 2.
