Alexandria Blue Anchors News Release
St. Cloud, Minn. - The Alexandria Blue Anchors defeated the St. Cloud Rox Monday night by a score of 7-6 at Faber Field. The win snaps a season-long seven game losing streak and the Anchors now sport a record of 5-19.
The Rox took an early lead against Blue Anchor starter Mickie Keuning in the bottom of the first despite him retiring the first two batters he faced. With the count 1-1, Adam Martin hit a homer to left field giving the Rox a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second, St. Cloud extended their lead against Keuning. Tyler Wolfe singled to start the frame and he went to second on a Conor Keniry. A sacrifice bunt from Tim Colwell put both runners in scoring position and Devin Pearson brought home two runs with a single making the score 3-0. Second baseman Chris Paul drove Keuning's 1-0 offering over the fence and the Rox had a 5-0 lead.
The Blue Anchors offense awoke in the fourth when Aaron Gretz led off with a single to left. Dalton Leuschke lined a ball off the glove of the third baseman for a single but was out at second on a fielder's choice from Kris Goodman. Keegan Dale drew a walk to load the bases and another fielder's choice off the bat of Andrew Sohn scored Gretz giving the Anchors their first run. Albert Baur followed with a double to score Goodman and Sohn making the score 5-3. On a 3-1 pitch from Rox starter Evan Wolf, Ryan Blanchard singled home Baur cutting St. Cloud's lead to 5-4.
Scott Sanderson entered in relief of Keuning in the bottom of the third. Keniry singled with two outs and went to second after Colwell walked. An infield single from Devin Pearson loaded the bases and Paul drew a bases-loaded walk, giving St. Cloud a 6-4 advantage.
Alexandria drew even in the top of the fourth. Bryce Jackson entered in relief of Wolf and walked Andrew Mulato to start the inning. A ground ball from Gretz moved Mulato to second and Leuschke reached on an error by the shortstop Keniry. A base hit by Goodman loaded the bases and Dale drew his second walk to bring home Mulato. On a 1-2 pitch from Jackson, Sohn hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Leuschke, tying the score at six.
Goodman singled with one out in the top of the sixth inning and Dale advanced him to second. Sohn delivered a clutch two-out base hit giving the Blue Anchors a 7-6 lead.
Keuning made his second start of 2013 and went two innings allowing five runs on six hits and he struck out one batter. Sanderson gave up two hits and two walks leading to one run. In his Anchors debut, Brandon Johnson (1-0) earned the victory. He pitched two scoreless innings and struck out two St. Cloud batters and gave up just one base hit. Andy Johnson pitched one inning and allowed just a walk and a base hit. Taylor Simpson pitched two-thirds of an inning and walked two. Ty Walker came in relief of Simpson and retired the only batter he faced to end the seventh. Jose Cardona, also making his Anchors debut, earned the save by pitching two innings and striking out three allowing one hit and a hit batter.
Minnesota Baseball Academy Player of the Game - Albert Baur (3B) - Baur saw his batting average climb to .358 after he went 3-5 at the plate. He scored once and drove in two.
Notes: With a hit tonight, Sohn has 36 on the season which is the most in the Northwoods League, Baur is second with 34...Dale has reached base via hit or walk in all six games he has played this season...Blanchard now has a six-game hitting streak...After nine hits Monday, the Anchors now have a team batting average of .290 which is tops in the Northwoods League...The Blue Anchors will take on the Willmar Stingers Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. at Knute Nelson Memorial Park...Tuesdays are Bark in the Park night and all dogs are welcome to the Shipyard...The game can be seen live at www.youtube.com/user/NorthwoodsLeague.
