Brockton Rox News Release
On Wednesday night, Quebec (25-14) scored 11 runs in the bottom of the first and coasted to a 13-0 whitewashing of Brockton (18-21).
Rox starter Manny Tejada entered the game having thrown eight innings in his last start, but did not record an out at Le Stade Municipal, facing seven hitters and giving up three singles, three doubles, and a home run. By the time the inning was over, Quebec had sent fifteen batters to the plate and collected ten hits.
Benoit Emond and Danny Scalabrini started the fateful first with singles. Goef Tomlinson doubled in Emond and clean-up hitter Eddie Lantigua cracked a three-run homer to clear the bases and give Quebec a 4-0 lead. Buck McNabb and Olivier LePine followed with doubles of their own before a Todd Leathers single knocked out the beleaguered Tejada.
Joey Baker took the mound next, retiring eighth place batsman Bill Greenwell on a sacrifice fly for the first out. But Leo Delfino drew a walk and Emond slugged the second three-run roundtripper of the inning to expand the home lead to 9-0. After Scalabrini fouled out, Tomlinson singled, Lantigua was hit by a pitch, and McNabb drove both in with his second double. Finally, Olivier LePine popped out to third and the inning mercifully ended.
After the first, Baker hurled four scoreless innings, walking none and striking out one in his continued comeback from the surgery that cost him the 2004 season.
Lantigua finished off the scoring with his second roundtripper of the game, a two-run shot in the sixth off rookie Stephen Sloan, who made his professional debut.
Former Brockton starter Marcos Castillo (2-0) picked up his second win as a member of Quebec, combining with reliever Coogie Freedman on the shutout. Tejada (4-5) shouldered the loss; he has now received a decision in each of his nine starts in 2005.
Brockton and Quebec play the finale of their three-game series on Thursday night at 7:05, Jon Koch for the Rox against Julien Tucker of les Capitales.
