Brockton Rox News Release
BROCKTON, MA - Brockton Rox RHP Jeff Long breezed through a complete-game shutout of the Worcester Tornadoes as the Rox captured a third consecutive win with a 6-0 victory on Friday night. Long retired 18 of the last 20 batters he faced, retired the side in order five times, and retired the first two batters of an inning six times.
It was Long's first complete game of the season, and the fifth complete game shutout by a Rox pitcher this year. He allowed just three hits, walked two batters and struck out four. Only once did runner reach second base and none advanced further than that.
The Rox offense built an early lead thanks to LF Keith Brachold's 11th home run of the season; a three-run shot in the third inning off of Worcester starter LHP Zach Zuercher. In the fourth inning, LF Jud Thigpen scored on an RBI single by CF Chris Valencia who broke out of an 0-17 slump with a 4-4 night and two RBI.
Leading 4-0 in the eighth, the Rox extended the advantage to 6-0 on a sacrifice fly by Thigpen, and Valencia second RBI single of the night.
The Rox and Tornadoes meet again on Saturday night at Campanelli Stadium with a scheduled first pitch of 7:05 PM. RHP Freddy Flores (5-4, 4.21 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Rox and face Worcester's RHP Chris Farley (4-3, 3.91 ERA).
